SMR HR Group has been privileged to be chosen to manage part of a National Teacher Training initiative by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. This project started in January 2011 and SMR were allocated positions in five states of Selangor, Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis.

Since January Mentors and Team Coordinators have been assigned to clusters scattered around these states. Each person has been allocated five schools where they are responsible for the ‘hands on’ training of teachers in years 1 to 3 in all of the schools. This is achieved by them team teaching, giving demonstration classes and conducting workshops for the teachers in the schools. The aim of this direct involvement is to help teachers utilize communicative methodology in their classrooms and to assist them with their own Professional Language Development.

Mentors are given a relative free hand to conduct specific needs analysis with the schools and then directly address issues in their clusters so that their help is both specific and relevant to the needs of the teachers we are serving.

This is a long term project which is contracted to finish in September 2013 and whilst we would have ideally preferred that all mentors who started in January would complete the full course of the contract, it has been inevitable that some have had to leave for various reasons such as family concerns, sickness and four who were dismissed because of unsuitability.

We have recently had a number of participants that have left the project and so have immediate vacancies for anyone who has the relevant qualifications, experience and pass interview. Requirements are:

1. Academic: A first degree + ESL Teaching qualifications (CELTA or equivalent)
(Candidates with DELTA or MA in related subject will have an advantage)
2. Experience: At least three years teaching experience of which most should be in teaching young children.
(Candidates with extended experience in Primary Education will have an advantage)

Chaiya
2 More special individuals required. Chaiya is a deeply rural location but is very close to long secluded beaches. Don’t expect to see foreigners on the beach; it is more likely that you will see dolphins swimming off shore when you go there to relax. You will be working in a well run, foreigner friendly government school teaching in a privately funded English Program. Your classrooms are air conditioned with computer, TV and DVD. You will be seeing the same students on a regular basis so you can have a real impact on their development. There is a very comfortable teacher’s room in which you will have your own desk and wireless internet. The town of Suratthani is 50kms south of Chaiya, so if you want to get off to the Islands at the weekend the ferry isn’t far away. These positions will suit teachers who want to avoid the tourist traps. You will have a desire to spend the majority of your time surrounded by Thai people and Thai culture. You will be one of only two native speaking teachers working in the school and you will probably be the only foreigners in the immediate area. Timetable

240 hours per quarter – normally scheduled at 20-23 hours per week. Most Kindy and YL teaching hours are during the weekend, except during summer when classes are also run on weekdays. Most adult teaching hours are in the evening, although some corporate teaching is daytime. Classes run from 7.30am to 9.45pm Monday – Friday; 7.45 am – 8.15pm on Saturday and 7.45am – 6pm on Sunday. Split shifts are sometimes inevitable, though they are avoided where possible.

Support

The Academic team includes an Academic Manager, Academic Coordinators and/or Senior teachers plus support staff in each location. They are there to support you in both academic and personal matters and will help you settle into your new life in Vietnam.

The school does not provide accommodation, but can arrange a hotel (at a modest cost) for arrival. This coming May 24-June 19 we are running an intensive leadership and cultural awareness training program in the Philippines. It is conducted entirely in English. Up to twenty businesspeople from Korea and other Asian countries are sent by their companies for the program.

I would like someone to “shadow” me during this program to learn what my position entails from first hand experience. This isn’t an “English camp” and it’s not just a workshop. We hold 4-6 training programs every year at present, with time off in between each program.

Nestled between the mountains and where the Kumano River empties into the Pacific, Shingu is a hub of the Kumano region with easy access to explore the natural beauty of the area and for visiting historical sites, such as the mountains, waterfalls, and the world heritage landmark Kumano Kodouh. The best way to get around Shingu is by bicycle, and public transportation is available throughout the region in the form of JR (Japan Rail) trains, public and private buses, or taxis.

Working in Shingu
Starting salary: 230,000 yen per month. Teachers who fulfill the basic duties of the position will be moved up to 250,000 yen after a 3 month trial period. We wish to encourage and reward people on the team who maintain a cheerful, positive attitude, therefore every 6 months afterwards instructors will be eligible for raises based on a review of their achievements.

Schedule: There are 46 work weeks with 15 days paid holidays in the KICC school year. All positions have two days off per week (typically Saturday and Sunday) except in the case of special events, such as Christmas or Halloween.

Traveling: You will mainly use trains, and in a few cases the bus, to get around. The fares for both will be covered by the school.

Resources: Numerous teaching resources and materials are available to you.
There are weekly brain-storming meetings for teachers which can help you adjust to your new job fueling you with creative ideas. Our computers are running Windows XP and have broadband internet access which can be utilized to produce teaching materials, do research, etc.

(Cultural note: In Japan, moving in to a new house or apartment typically requires a deposit known as “key-money”. Key-money is often ten months worth of your rent paid in advance – only 66% to 80% of which will be refunded by the landlord upon leaving).

WHO WE ARE: Founded in 1999, Leader Language Schools are English language institutes in central Taiwan. WHAT TEACHERS DO: Teachers have a mix of group classes and tutorials from different ages and levels. Teachers are not teaching the same age group, day-in day-out. Each class has at least one native speaker teacher and one Taiwanese teacher of English. These two teachers are not in the class at the same time, but coordinate classes together.

WHAT LEADER OFFERS:

While Changhua is a mid-sized city, it has a MUCH lower cost of living than other larger cities such as Taipei. We have two work options depending on teachers’ preferences.

*Five-day-a-week schedule: The starting hourly pay is $NT610-$640 (based on experience)/teaching hr. & a guaranteed MINIMUM of 20 teaching hrs./wk. On this schedule with an average of 25 teaching hours per week, a teacher would receive approx. $NT61,000 per month. (Exchange rate= about $NT32=1USD). * Trainers are required to have Bachelor degree and teaching certificate (TESOL/ CELTA/ TEFL). Those with certificates or knowledge of TOEFL iBT, IELTS, SAT, GRE, GMAT are preferable.
* Trainers with more than one year experience teaching English can be considered if they do not have a teaching certificate.

3. Test Process before Recruiting

Step 1: Provide native teachers with information related to the job, salary, benefits, etc… through email. In case they have enquiries, they can contact EQuest through emails for discussion.

Step 2: Interview native teachers to know about the teaching experiences, pronunciation, etc. (In case native teachers are in Vietnam, the interview will be face-to-face one. If they are abroad, EQuest interview through chat or telephone.)

Step 3: Native teachers who have not taken TOEFL iBT will have to take 2 tests of TOEFL iBT Kaplan at EQuest, mainly two skills: speaking and writing. Their scores must reach over 80%.

Step 4: Native teachers in Vietnam will have to spend time observing classes, then they have to take trial lessons. In case they are abroad, native teachers are required to prepare the lesson plan, in which they present the teaching methodology, time distribution, etc they apply to the lessons.

4. Salary

The salary is based on the degrees, teaching certificates, teaching experiences, how long they commit to work, results of the TOEFL iBT tests (2) taken at the company and the trial lessons. Salary is paid on the last day of the calendar month.

5. Other benefits:

* Medical insurance is provided for native trainers, which saves them about 100USD/month.

* Vacation includes one day per contractual month and nine (9) days for Vietnamese national holidays.

* If the trainers commit to work for two years, at least, the work permit will be arranged and paid by the company (as long as the trainer has the Criminal Check issued by his/her government), which saves each trainer about USD 500/year. Also, the one way flight ticket will be reimbursed nine months after the starting day.
