ALC Tetouan is currently accepting applications for two full time EFL teaching positions starting in October 2008.
The ideal candidates are native speakers of English in search of teaching experience, interested in exploring Morocco and its culture and willing to make at least a 10 month teaching commitment. He or she should have at least a BA or equivalent degree. Some teaching experience and/or professional training (e.g. a CELTA or TEFL certificate) is helpful. A working knowledge of Arabic, Spanish or French is highly recommended. Most of all, the Center is looking for dynamic teachers who are willing to get to know their students and motivate them with fun and memorable classroom activities.
The positions are full time, entailing 14 contact hours of EFL instruction per week and 3 hours leading an extracurricular activity such as a drama or poetry club, a Center magazine workshop or a weekly sing-along night. Teachers with musical, editing, artistic, dramatic or literary skills are encouraged to use their experience in devising activities open to students of all levels. Past extra curricular activities have included a drama club, a radio program (recorded on CD), a Center magazine, hip-hop dance lessons and quiz nights.
ALC Tetouan is the smallest of the Centers in Morocco. Our total enrollment is around 400 students in the Fall. Most ALC Tetouan teachers are also full time Moroccan high school teachers. There are no more than two full time native English speakers working at the Center at any given time. The total staff at the Center consists of 11 teachers and 2 administrators.
The academic year consists of three, 10-week trimesters from October to June and two, 11-day intensive courses during the month of July. Classes are held in the evening from 6:30 to 8:00, Monday to Friday and throughout the day on Saturday. Most learners on weeknights and Saturday afternoon are high school and university students, but classes may also include a few adult professionals. Saturday mornings are devoted to classes for children and young adolescents. Class size is limited to 20 students in regular classes and 16 students in young learners’ classes.
The curriculum currently in use at the Center is based on the Oxford University Press American Headway series for beginning and intermediate students, MacMillan’s Upper Intermediate Inside Out text for advanced students and the Cambridge University Press Cambridge English Worldwide series for young adolescents. Classrooms are all equipped with CD/DVD players, TV sets and whiteboards. There are 10 online computers in a common area for student or class use. The teachers’ room has a modest collection of teacher resources (class sets of picture dictionaries, learnersí readers and assorted texts, activity books and grammar references) and two online computers with CD and DVD players/burners.
Total compensation is about 4,800 dirhams/month with an additional 2,000 dh stipend, enough to live on comfortably but modestly. An apartment is provided for both native speaker teachersí use. Vacation pay, based on hours worked throughout the year, is paid in August. The Center does not usually offer classes in September. Assistance applying for a work contract and residency is provided. Basic health insurance is also included.
Tetouan is a medium sized city (pop. 350,000) with a small town atmosphere. It lies 45 km south-southeast of Tangier (about 1 hour by shared taxi), 10 km from the Mediterranean and 40 km. from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. It’s quiet, scenic and redolent of a unique Andalusian and colonial heritage. Cultural offerings and nightlife are limited, nor is there a large expatriate community. Because most of our classes take place in the evening between 6:30 and 8:00 (except on Saturdays), most of a full time teacher’s day is free.
In order to apply for the position a resume, scanned copies of relevant documents (BA degree with transcripts, certificates, etc.) and a recent photo are required (a scanned passport photo is fine). An interview is part of the hiring process. If a personal interview isn’t possible, a telephone interview is acceptable.
