It appears as though a call is being made for Christians to take TEFL jobs so that they can fulfill a call to work as tentmakers. Since many countries are closed or to missionaries or have restrictions on Christian missionaries but have a need for TEFL teachers, many would be missionaries are jumping into the TEFL profession. They are learning how to be missionaries alongside being English Teachers.
I am not sure this is a good thing. Students get taught by teachers with an ulterior motive and TEFL teachers find themselves competing for salaries against teachers who are receiving support from other organizations. Unfortunately, there is another insidious factor. There are organizations out there that are pushing TEFL tentmaking. They are nothing but TEFL businesses that need teachers and they have found that they can collect a nice fee for placing these so called English Teacher tentmakers while at the same time paying a substandard wage.
